Gaps galore. Between floor boards, around radiator pipes. I've considered sealing everything, but I can imagine I would miss something and feel frustrated spending days doing so if I didn't get results.
Yes the PIV approach would be nice in that respect - it should save you having to take other measures.

I have looked at a positive airflow. If I got my external extractor working in reverse would this act in the same way?
Hmm it would depend on the model, how powerful, how much pressure it could create.  The PIVs are optimised to create a positive pressure so should do the job better.  One that is intended for a through-the-wall installation that is instead working with a board in an opened window apperture would avoid any modifications to the property.

I used toggle clamps to hold the board in the window frame so it was easy to install and remove.  Depends how much trouble you want to go to as you might be able to rig up something more simple in the short term.

PIV is rather expensive for this kind of problem and a bit overkill.

I'd politely ask if you can look at the oven.  There may be a build up of grease which is fairly easy to clean.  Or a pack of Oven Pride costs £2.99.  I know I have to be careful with what I cook in my oven, some things just seem to crud it up and I have to clean it again because I can see smoke inside the cavity.

But why risk jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire!!

OP mentioned this flat is particularly large and affordable.

A different flat would have its own set of problems.

Can second this suggestion - amazing stuff. No real scrubbing either as the chemicals disentegrate all the crud on the racks and make removal of the stuff inside the oven a breeze.

  • Your landlord is correct

Exactly. This has been my third move in 3 years.

First flat the neighbours kitchen was above our bedroom and even with earplugs his walking and door 'closing' would wake me up at 3am.

Second basement flat flooded twice in 10 months, the second time included sewage.

Whilst this oven problem is frustrating I'm not willing to be the one making constant adjustments.

And to the person saying the landlord is correct. Whilst that may be right, Landlords have a professional responsibility to at least explore the issue if there is a health hazard. My first day in this flat the warm water didn't work on the shower and I was told the reason was something I was doing wrong. In the end there was an existing issue a plumber had to fix.

I'm sure there are great landlords, but I get the impression some like to received their monthly rent payment, whilst treating their tenants like a supplementary income instead of as humans paying for a service.
