Paint external pebbledash and clean brickwork

Hi all,
I'd like to paint the pebbledash on my external walls white and clean up the exposed brickwork to get it looking like new too.

1) What kind of paint do I need and how much would it cost? Is it simply a case of painting directly on to the pebbledash or do I have to prep it in any way?

2) How should I go about cleaning the brickwork? Pressure wash? Brick cleaning acid? Which is best?

3) Can anyone recommend any specific products to do these jobs?

use a pressure washer to clean it all first.
then use a masonary paint. either sandtex or an own brand ie wickes.

Thanks loads.
Would it be cheaper to buy or hire a pressure washer? What do you think both of these options would cost? Where would be the best place to buy/hire this?

Also, how would the finish of a pressure washer compare to using brick cleaning acid? How should the acid applied to the bricks?

Finally, how many coats of masonary paint do you think would be necessary for a pebbledash wall that's never been painted before?

Hiya , we have a pebbledash walls on about two thirds of our walls and we have had to do it once in 10yrs... it only needed one coat of Sandtex which incidentally is doing an excellent job of staying bright and white... I guess you would need at least two coats ....

you will either have to seal with stabilizing solution if sand and cement is sandy , if it isn't i suggest giving it a thinned coat of dulux weathershield masonry paint , then a couple of coats , add a little bit of water to this as well as it tends to dry cracked if it's too thick

I have to agree with nickj. Best clean the brickwork, and pebbledash may sure you removed any mold to with mold killer

Dulux weathershield is good and should be watered down with first coat so it soaks in. You can apply with brush, or roller. You can get trades weathershield at local dulux tradecenter you dont have to be in the trade its thicker than the stuff they sell in B&Q.

Wrong time of year to be painting really;)

I did mine a couple of years back.

Nice warm day. Washed with hose pipe and a stiff brush.

Used Dulux Weathershield (2 coats).

Then next door moaned because it made theres look worse:rotfl:

Also when painting pebbledash please tell your neighbours that there might be paint slashes (best to move any cars in driveways out of the way)

I forgot to say that yes it is wrong time of year tbh. I am not sure the temperature that the paint dries but is above freezing and its not far from that outside at mo. Also walls need to dry out a little if you washing them down. Probably best waiting until the Spring

We did our rendering with 2 coats but it had previous been painting and we did seal with water/pva glue and bits that had flaked off around window sills. We did it in Summer with a large roller on a rod and some paint brushes of various lengths. You can do it quickly with a roller buts the small bits that take time.

the drying time with pebbledash is much longer than on a smooth wall as the paint gets into all the gaps between the pebbles and is quite thick . do not apply if it is freezing or will freeze overnight , do not paint after 2-00ish in the afternoon as it will not dry , if you must paint at this time of year dulux do an all seasons masonry paint .
