You used to be able to pay £25/month to get the HDD functionality back (but not watch Sky channels of course) - not sure if that is still available but anyway it is much more cost-effective to buy a Humax pvr0 -
Sky Q box has to be returned to Sky. An HD box can be used to get free channels to watch but not record.0

If it's a Sky Q box...
This came up a few weeks ago. If you have a Q box then it can't be used without a Sky sub, and the T&Cs state clearly that you don't own it and must return it to Sky when your sub ends. There's an additional charge for not returning it. It may continue to work for a while as a simple receiver, minus the recording and HD functionality, but will stop after a period of time.1
