Resigned from job

I resigned two months ago from a 25 year career that was making me very miserable. I thought I'd find a new, lower paid, less responsible job very quickly, but I'm worrying as I haven't even been invited for interview. If I can't find anything soon will I be able to claim any benefits temporarily even if my partner works? Thanks.

I feel for you - I’ve been there myself in the past.

New style JSA could be claimed for six months if your NI record is complete for 2019-20 and 2020-21. It is not means tested.

Alternatively Universal Credit but entitlement would depend on your circumstances (jointly with your partner) as it is means tested. Try a benefits calculator. https://www.gov.uk/benefits-calculators You can’t claim if you have joint capital over £16,000. You both have to claim.

You may be sanctioned and be told they cannot pay you because you voluntarily left your last job. Any such sanction would end 13 weeks from when you quit. However If you are asked about it and explain the impact on your mental health hopefully a sanction would not be applied.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
  • Just applied for a new job, so fingers crossed. It's reassuring to know there's a safety net. Thank you for your help.
