Do I still need to file a S.A?

From 6/4/20 to 5/4/21 I earned a whopping £793.70. Milky Bars are NOT on me.
As I understand it I don't need to file a self assessment because I earned under £1000. However, would it be prudent to send a letter to HMRC (with copy wage slips) outlining the above so I don't receive the obligatory fine? I ask because I'd rather not spend god only knows how long on hold before explaining why I don't need to pay.
Also, in connection with my job during the tax year I had to pay £128.85 in diesel. I'm guessing I won't be able to claim that back?
Thanks.

Have you actually sent a notice to file a return?HappilyNorth said:From 6/4/20 to 5/4/21 I earned a whopping £793.70. Milky Bars are NOT on me.

And why couldn't you claim something from your employer if it was business related?in connection with my job during the tax year I had to pay £128.85 in diesel1 -
I only found out recently I needed to ask HMRC for a new UTR after bankruptcy, which I did. So I haven't sent a notice to file a return, just requested a new UTR which they sent recently.Dazed_and_C0nfused said:

Self employed delivery driver so I don't have an employer. I was just thinking they're hardly likely to refund my fuel (which I'm allowed to claim) if I'm not even filing a S.A because the earnings were so low.0 -
The fuel would be an expense against your income from self-employment.If you have a new UTR you should log in and check if HMRC has sent YOU a notice to file which you would then be obliged to so do.3

This is what I'm greeted by when I login. I guess I still have to file?

It looks like to registered recently for self assessment for some reason so ‘Yes’ you have to file. If £793 is your only income with expenses of £128 and you have no other income, there will be no tax to pay.HappilyNorth said:This is what I'm greeted by when I login. I guess I still have to file?

But you may wish to voluntarily pay Class 2 NI if it increase your State Pension and you wouldn't otherwise expect to be able to add 2029:21 as an additional year.
Maybe worth checking your State Pension forecast before filing the return.1 -
I would contact them and ask them to withdraw the return. As you’ve earned less than 1k you don’t have to file. If the return is withdrawn it shouldn’t attract penalties etc.*The RK and FF fan club* #Family*Don’t Be Bitter- Glitter!* #LotsOfLove ‘Darling you’re my blood, you have my heartbeat’ Dad 20.02.200

He may be continuing to be self-employed.Mrs_Ryan said:I would contact them and ask them to withdraw the return. As you’ve earned less than 1k you don’t have to file. If the return is withdrawn it shouldn’t attract penalties etc.1 -
Did you continue self employment after 5/4 21? If so you will still need your registration.
HMRC do not refund your expenses. You get tax relief by deducting them from your income to arrive at your profit figure.
But since you will not have any tax to pay there is nothing to get tax relief against.1
