If the TV uses a DNS name (rather than an IP address) to access the remote LG site, then you could configure a DNS entry which points it to an invalid address.
This is a good idea, but there is also the chance the the TV will default to some hardcoded IP addresses that can't be changed if it can't contact the LG site.
The risk in them doing a fixed IP address would be that it might change at some point and so leave customers out of support.
The DNS trick (or even a dummy entry in the hosts file on a computer) is an old one.

Another update to the TV today, with the bugs we had it was worth the risk......

Auto Update can again be disabled and we didnt get an error after watching a show on prime and a
    film on Plex...

No more updates until everything stops working.   Thanks for the tips on what to  try if it does it again.

Do you have any lip-sync issues on your TV? Specifically, the need to add audio delay on Plex? I have an LG up8100 series, and it's driving me up the wall. Until the last update, I am sure I could put eg 30ms audio delay on Plex, and not affect other sources. Now, it seems that any delay I put on one app affects them all (eg iplayer) so I manually have to turn it off again.

Not with Plex no.  Used to get that with Kodi on a PC.  Some files would play fine on my PC but on the media
one the sync could be out by a lot.

Format and quality with the transfer speed could be the cause rather than the player or file.
