Lining paper over Skimmed and Painted Wall

Hi All,

I have two attic rooms for my growing family within which I want put up a decent grade of lining paper and then paint over with a decent quality paint (Dulux).

These rooms have used as storage areas for years, the walls have skimmed and then been painted - around 20yrs ago.

My question is, do I need to do anything special with these walls for the lining paper? Any treatment needed (PVA) or scoring the surface (if so, could you recommend a tool please) or can I just start putting up the lining paper? Intend to do it all myself.

Thanks

If you prime the walls, just use watered down wallpaper paste, not PVA.
Give the walls a wipe down with a sugar soap solution, let them dry, then get cracking with the papering. You may find the paper will bubble & lift when you come to paint the walls. Leave the paint to dry, and the paper should go back down by itself.

  • I never get why people paper over perfect plaster. I’m renovating our house that we moved into a couple of years back and the previous owners have put lining paper over everything, as well as some dubious taste in wallpaper in some cases.

As per the above, if it’s in good shape just paint it. If not and you’re not adverse to a bit of graft look up knauff proroll. I’ve just plastered two walls in my home with this and it’s come out perfect. They are the first two walls I’ve ever plastered too so it’s not as if I’m a pro.

As others have said, don't bother with the lining paper. If there are any knocks and dings that need a bit of attention use Gyproc Easyfill or Polyfilla Easysand. The former is much cheaper though and seems just as easy to use.
Sorry I can't think of anything profound, clever or witty to write here.

Why do you think you need to use lining paper? If the walls have been skimmed and painted, aren't they in a decent enough condition to just paint as is?

If you are going to use the paper then don't score the surface, plenty of YT vids on the correct way to apply lining paper.

The rooms are in the a renovated attic with a dorma - I have recently spent a lot of money upgrading the outside roof, double glazing and PVC cladding around the dorma- I was hoping to squeeze out as much energy saving as possible and thought the lining paper will give that bit extra. I am no expert so appreciate your comment, it's not an absolute must - am I just wasting y money?

Lining paper won't improve the thermal properties of the walls. You could use a thermal paper (Wallrock for example), but the gain in insulation is minimal at best.

As has been said, you use lining paper to even out bad plaster. That's it's purpose.

If your plaster's good then you don't need it. It's kind of one or the other, in my opinion.
