I'm another that finds tinned corned beef good value.
Princes 340gm on clubcard offer in Tesco for £3.00 instead of £3.50.
I usually buy the reduced salt version.6 -
When I open a tin of corned beef I cut it in half and tightly wrap and freeze half the tin. Living alone i would be eating it for a week:) It freezes beautifully, and with half a tin, especially if its been in the fridge and really cold will slice very well
I am another one who prefers Princes Corned beef and always keep a good lookout for when its on special offer.
Its so versatile for salads, sandwiches (with some pickle of course ) or in a corned beef hash when you just want so 'comfort' food.
I've also chopped a bit up and added some diced onion and carrots and made some pasties which are a lovely change on a picnic from sandwiches. Bully beef, as my late husband called it, goes an awful long way and is virtually eternal keeps so well in its tin.I always use a tin opener though to open it as those keys always seem to breakAny crumbly bits of corned beef can get chucked into an omelette or quiche. I find a quiche case will accept almost anything savoury

A friend of mine does pasta bake with corned beef topped with cheese.
It sounds delicious, I'm going to try it soon.7 -

I have 5 tins in my stash so will buy from Tesco at £3.00 and consider it worth the extra £0.11.8 -
Just made the "stock up" list. One of the few benefits of my Highland Clearance commute means a lunchtime trip to Aldi and Tesco tomorrow. Pieces all made and in the fridge so we don't need to buy lunches.
Just cooked down some chopped broccoli, asparagus & potato to add to Barra's dinner. The veg is good for him and bulks it out. The rest of the veg peeling are now in the compost bin. Barra is our sassy rescue sighthound.
Work is getting more stressful (and for minimum wage) so trying to stash every extra penny in case I need to look for another job.
Waiting for a black machine dye to be delivered which will revive: 3 x Mr Z's joggies (7 holes mended in them on Friday), a pair of my jeans and some faded to manky grey socks. All for £7.99.
Waiting for the wind to pick up as the midgies are fierce today and will then head to the beach to comb for kindling :-)11 -
@London_1 - You've been so very patient and I really hope you can show Dora the door before too long. It must be so frustrating that you can't get on with what you want to do, like showers. And the long wait for hospital transport is a bind too. You put up with it all with such good grace and it's good to hear you have a lot of support from your family.
Re corned beef - I don't disagree it's still good value for money, given how far it can be stretched in so many different ways. It's just that I don't buy it as much as I used to since I'm always trying to stick to a budget and some weeks the budget doesn't always allow. It's the pesky keys that annoy me the most.
Beautiful day today, my bedding was out drying on the patio first thing this morning and fresh sheets put on the bed. I shall look forward to that tonight. Today I've cleaned one kitchen cupboard and its contents, all glassware. The regularly used stuff is on the bottom shelf and was clean, but the not-used-so-much items on the top shelf needed a wash/polish as well, so it took considerably longer than I anticipated. There's just one other kitchen cupboard that needs attention (all the others and the drawers have been done fairly recently) so I've earmarked that for later in the week.
I've done a meal plan for this week and will be using a fair bit of stuff from the fridge and freezer. Today's dinner is gammon slices from the freezer, with steamed broccoli, carrots and potatoes. For breakfast we had boiled eggs and dippy soldiers and at lunchtime some cream cheese on crackers followed by a coconut macaroon.Be kind to others and to yourself too.9 -
I think we react instinctively when a price jumps especially when it happens more than once in a short time. Then it's time to settle down and see if it is still worth the money - and of course keep a sharp eye out for offers!8

Aldi corned beef is ok. And I was put of corned beef after a very tubey lidl tin some years back. Which reminds me I need to stock up.
we have a small coop, an ethnic shop, and Lidl 10 min walk from us. Asda 15 min walk. Morrisons, sainsbury, aldi about half hour walk, marks is about 40 mins. Waitrose about an hour walk in the city centre, and a fair size Tesco just over an hours walk away near the only savers.I get a Tesco delivery every fortnight and then pick other bits depending on how much of a walk I want.I know I have a massive choice just because I have stronger legs than I’ve ever had. And I have a rucksack from decathlon with a separate cooler section at the bottom of it too.
most of my walking is early morning though so not much chance of yellow stickers.
Just had our wedding anniversary so i splashed out on Marks food as a treat… there wasn’t that much food for the money - but it really is better quality, nicer tasting stuff.I keep forgetting dobbies has a waitrose and it’s ten mins walk up the hill so might go and check that out for yellow stickers at some point as I have a few days off. They do a too good to go bag too… so might try that if I can as they go quick.working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?7 -
We had an email from Anglian water saying our bill is going up from £24 a month to £62 a month!
At our old house we spent £45 a month so I did think their estimate of £24 a month was too low here at the new house. We do have a waterfall shower and a huge bath here so I am trying to keep a stricter eye on how much we are using.
I have been timing our showers (2-3 minutes for body wash and 5 minutes if I wash my hair, which is actually fine and I feel perfectly clean afterwards) and I have bought a new showerhead that uses less water. I'm trying not to flush the loo as much and now the weather is warmer I won't be drinking as much tea. I probably will only have a bath once a week until it gets colder again and not fill it up so much as it is a massive bath.
I think I was using the kettle a lot in the colder months for tea and hot water bottles as I was trying not to switch on the blooming heating. I'm going to be much more careful with water usage from now on.7
