I once smashed my hand through the pane of glass of one of the windows in our living room. I wa ls tasked with opening the window, and it was before double glazing had been installed. The wooden frames would swell and get stuck. No one, prior to this, had told me to hit the frame to help unstick it. So I just started hitting the window. Bang, bang, bang, smash! Unbelievably I escaped without a single scratch! Mum and dad weren't too pleased about the cost of replacing the glass though! Haha
DD is a very independent miss, in many respects. I've learnt to go with it, and teach her safety around doing things instead. As such, we got her her own knives from kuhn rikon (they have a kids range). She knows she can use those to chop fruit and veg as she sees fit. She has only cut herself once, and it was a small nic. As others have pointed out, we all still have accidents as adults (accidentally cut myself twice last week!).
My experience with DD thus far is that she is eager to learn, and wants to help. So she knows how to use the washing machine (she has a laundry basket with sections for white, colours and darks, so knows they need to be separate too), will wash up various bits and bobs in the sink (probably been favourite job! Lol), make herself breakfast, helps me cook, loves making a pizza (what a shock) etc. She turned 6 today.
She loves all the crafty/creative stuff too, so consequently received a lot 'make your own' type kits as gifts. Bathbombs, jewelry kits, tie dye etc. On it straight away. Tie dye will have to wait as we've had a busy weekend.

my slight bugbear is that the primary school that teaches cooking skills so brilliantly is only allowed to use plastic knives and forks for school dinners. Not sure that teaches anything except that plastic cutlery is useless ☹️6

When I was in school, about 60 years ago, the school was finished and we had no kitchens - so just did notebooks about foods and recipes. I feel I am still learning to cook - one of the reasons I follow all of the food sites on here. And I did set off a sulfur explosion in my science class which caused the entire school to be shut down for a day.9

Observation - all the petrol stations near us that have seen their prices steadily creeping up for the past few months have now got to 199.9 for diesel and it's stopped at that level for the past couple of weeks - Petrol is still creeping up although more slowly than it was. This seems to suggest to me that the more recent increases have been "because they can" rather than because they were justified - and the "fear" of hitting the £2 a litre mark has put them off trying it on any further.
As a further note on this - when I passed my driving test in 1991, petrol was less per gallon than it is per litre now.🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

I spotted my first over £2 per litre diesel yesterday Nottinghamshire - and it wasn't at a service station! Genuinely shocked. Local to me (North Wales) they've been stuck at the £199.9 mark, also for the last couple of weeks. I'm waiting to see who caves first. The science teacher in me is horrified at the Bunsen burner antics. The 11 year old in me remembers us testing if hair burns and not even thinking about plucking a couple of strands out to check.8

newlywed said:Me… I burnt myself at school during home economics/cooking. I was 16 and it was going to be graded as part of my coursework, so i kept quiet and did my washing up in freezing cold water!!
had been using the oven at school for three years… just had a panic moment and didn’t think.
During the afternoon rinsed it regularly in cold water every time I passed the loos. So I am grateful my parents had already taught me what to do when you burn yourself.
I had also previously poured coffee from the percolator (still bubbling) over my hand when pouring myself a coffee at home… and had various walking into doors, door handles, lamp post moments too.I would add that I continue to burn or steam or accidentally cut myself on a fairly regular basis and that age isn’t necessarily going to be a prevention of that!!
it’s far better to teach kids what to do if or when it happens to them!
Bearing in mind she must have done some sort of first aid training as a teacher (when did compulsory first aid training for teachers come in?) I'm wondering when the cold water advice (I believe it has now changed to luke warm water) started?Live the good life where you have been planted.
