Updating a credit file when account is closed

Options
Does anyone know how long it takes for a personal credit file to be updated when a credit card account is closed?

HSBC wrote to me in August 2021 to say that as my credit card hadn't been used for some time it would be closed within 2 months if they heard nothing further. As I no longer needed the card I left it for HSBC to close.

Called them today as it still showing as active (and up to date) on my equifax file. After the usual long wait on hold was told they could not see if the account was open or closed and I should go into a branch!

The equifax report suggests it is still open........

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Mark H

Who did you call - Equifax or HSBC?  I guess it's possible that the account is still open, and HSBC have not got round to closing it.
It can take a while for the CRAs to receive updates.  Most companies tend to report monthly, but not all of them.  It's possible that HSBC have simply not submitted their report to Equifax yet - and when they do, it could still take some time for Equifax to update their data.
I shouldn't worry about it - as long as it's showing as up to date, it's doing no harm.  You can expect your credit score to drop when Equifax finally do receive notification that the account is closed - but since the score is meaningless, please don't worry about this.

    It was HSBC I called.

Will take a look at my equifax file again in a few months!
