Cash settlements on contents insurance claims

Options
My insurers are using an agent to fix my garage door.  I don't like what they can supply so got a separate quote.  In conversations the 'agent' said the cost of work was circa £2800 (although I had to really push to get a figure, first red flag).  My quote was £2700 or thereabouts, however they are offering me a cash settlement of £2085 (£2335 -£250 excess)
When I queried this, the agent ( very uncomfortably told me, as if she wasn't supposed to, 2nd red flag) that they have effectively a 'rate card' with the insurance company and they can only invoice the insurance co. £2085 for a 'garage door'
Surely they have to give me the cost of the repair, irrespective of what their deal is with the insurance company.
Grateful for any advice, and yes, I am in the middle of reading my policy.
thanks

They're under no obligation to inform you of the commercial arrangement between them and the insurer.

If it was kitchen white goods you'd likely be given a gift card or voucher for Currys or AO.com etc for £1,000 or whatever but you can be 100% confident that you insurer has not paid anything close to that for it despite the face value.

It is standard practice these days for policies to state that cash settlements will be based on their preferred suppliers rate including any corporate discounts. The Financial Ombudsman support this stance as long as the preferred supplier can supply an appropriate item and therefore its just your choice that you want cash.

Lose a few pairs of unbranded diamond earrings and you decline the £5,000 Goldsmiths voucher then you'd have to accept the £3,500 in cash
Lose a pair of Cartier diamond earrings and you decline the £5,000 Goldsmiths voucher then you probably can get the full £5,000 in cash because Goldsmiths do not sell Cartier jewellery

Yes Sandtree is correct. It is often found in the sections of the policy called "How we settle Claims".
  • OK, it was just grinding with me a little, so your insight and knowledge is appreciated.
