Self Assessment: HMRC refunded tax and then want me to refund it back again??

If you check the other thread Dazed you will see that the op was attempting to put the PAYE income in the self-employed section. I suspect that this income has now been correctly entered on the employment pages, but not the tax that was deducted (which created the earlier refund).
So I don't think this would affect it.
Also, since this is the first time (as far as I remember) completing an online tax return, I don't know why they refunded me in the first place.

To be honest, I'm absolutely at a loss. I will struggle to pay the NIC's without the added 2K+.

Have you actually checked the calculation with the PAYE tax deducted included on the employment page???0

I'm looking for it.... not sure where... is it this one?

You are getting very very confused.
Who actually deducted tax of £2256.68???
Was this all deducted in the 2020:21 tax year???
You need to look at the PAYE calculation you got last June.0 -
Thanks, I'm going through them on my tax account online, and I can't see where I would have made such a huge contribution.
I was made redundant in 2017 and since then I haven't earned above the tax threshold, averaging between 7 - 10k per year.
Could it possibly be something to do with tax codes? I put zero, because I couldn't see anything which suggested I owed money, but in the past few years I've had all sorts, such as 1250L, 779L, 282T. Also, strangely, there is a the below notice which seems a bit weird because it's quite a long time out of date:

I think you could do worse than phone your local tax office (number on your online tax account).
I once got in a bit of a pickle when I filled in one of their online forms incorrectly because of their strange terminology and the way they collect income tax.
Your income hasn't been enough for you to have paid any income tax.
If you just guess at codes or put a wrong number a mistake will be made.
One phone call can sort it all out. It doesn't matter if you have to wait to speak to someone, it's well worth it.
I phoned when I didn't understand what was going on and spoke to a very knowledgeable person who was able to sort out the status of my income tax in no time at all. It turned out that I was due a refund - only £54 but it was still a refund.

I got the amount of £5109 by adding up my bank statements.
The company folded when the govt asked them to start contributing to the furlough/make contributions, so I couldn't get hold of my P60 any more.
Actually I just found an amount on the HMRC website which is slightly different so I can amend this.0 -
In June 2021 HMRC sent you a PAYE calculation and refund for £2256.68.
You 100% need to look at that calculation to see what details were included. If you didn't pay £2256.68 in tax and have banked a refund for that amount then ultimately you will have to pay it back (via your Self Assessment return).
But of the calculation included income/tax that was correct for 2020:21 then you might have omitted things from your Self Assessment return. And once included it may well be that you don't need to repay the £2256.68 (or not all of it).0
