May just be me but the link is not active to the story.

A bit misleading the 75% increase is on the fee charged to solicitors who currently pay a lower fee than a lay administrator. The increase for DIYers is £58 (27%) still steep but the first in many years and a lot less the the previous proposal.

Services need to be paid for. If there's money in the pot why should other taxpayers subsidise.

Have just paid £215 and I thought that was steep enough !

The executors will pay it, but will come out of the estate.
