My rent and council tax I have been paying over

I had a call yesterday from my council to tell me for years iv have overpaid on my rent and council tax and I'm receiving a large amount paid to my bank today. I rang them again to which they said it was paid back to council so now I'm waiting for a call tomorrow. £6000 is what they owe me am I still entitled to my back payment or will they just keep it ?

Sure that's not a scam? The council will usually write a letter.

That sounds like a potential scam, so be cautious.

Council Tax can't be paid back to the Council as the Council would have the money anyway if you had overpaid.  Usually, claiming back the overpayment would require initiation by the person that overpaid.

As for overpaid rent, how did that happen and why would the Council be the people to refund?

      That certainly sounds like a scam.
      In my experience a council would always communicate in writing about matters around council tax and rent liability.

 OP -  Did you give them your bank / personal details?
 Why would the 'money' be paid to the council, when they supposedly owe you the money.

 Have you contacted the council for further information?
