Fixed Penalty Notice on stolen vehicle

I have received a fixed penalty notice warning from DVLA on a vehicle that was stolen and reported to the Police.  I have written to the DVLA providing them with the relevant information requested ie crime reference number date etc. however they have just acknowledged the reply and said until SORN or notifying DVLA of a disposal I am still liable to pay £100 fixed penalty notice.

Can anyone assist as my understanding is that SORN does not need to be completed where a vehicle has been stolen and reported to the Police.

Thank you

Did you report it to your insurers and claim for it? Certainly they normally update MIAFTR which feeds to the DVLA to note a car stolen unrecovered
  • Yes informed insurers as transferred insurance over the new vehicle.   The police have confirmed they have recorded it stolen in the appropriate  places and that it is DVLA who need to check but they just keep sending letters saying we are liable to pay and if we do not pay before x date then the full amount of £100 is payable.  I have written 4 letters now even with a transcript of a telephone call with the police confirming its been reported and records noted

Transferring the insurance is not the same as claiming... sales and service guys wont give two hoots as to why you want to move the policy onto another vehicle. The Claims system is what would automatically feed info into MIAFTR and so the DVLA and its the claims guys that do that.

I've no idea about the police and their path for updating the DVLA, you'd assume they do but...

To check the bleeding obvious, you have spoken to the police to ensure they have the right reg on file? The transcript of a call will have been typed by someone else/AI and so even if its right there it could be wrong if the person taking the call mistyped it etc

  • I notified the insurers stolen but did not make a claim as it was third party only therefore no claim could be made.
