There is a possibility that the motherboard had been a return 'as faulty' that got pushed to the back of a shelf and then, as part of some clear out, untested, old and forgotten stock may have been passed onto the charity.  £300 has no meaning, how much did you pay for it?  And what is the make/model of the motherboard.

I have never expected any warranty form a charity shop purchase. It is , in effect, a donation to the charity rather than a retail sale.

Moral of the story is possibly that it's a bad idea to get something on the cheap from a charity shop if you want a warranty.
