Replacing Kitchen Cabinet Handles?

My kitchen cupboard and draw handles are off colour and grimy despite my efforts to clean them!
I have seen loads of similar handles in Wickes, The Range and Wilko etc however, i don't understand the sizing and there are no samples in the stores which i can try the screw with to see if it fits.
They say 27mm 30mm 35mm 40mm on the packs which i think is the length of screw but mine is 26mm. No mention of thickness of screw which i'm concerned about.
I don't want to pay almost a tenner for something i am unable to return after opening.

the size is probably the diameter of the knob. They usually come with screws to suit.0
