Please ignore, I have found the answer.--------------------------------
My house is on a large corner plot and is completely surrounded by a wooden fence. Its not one of those where you have fence panels slotted into concrete posts but its one which was made by the previous owner about 5 years ago.
Its sturdy and I have no reason to remove it and change it for something else but it does need some tlc.
I need to put some creosote on it as I dont think it has been coated with anything since it was erected. In some places, mainly on the inside of the garden it looks almost like new but in a lot of areas on the outside of the fence it is covered with a coating of green which I presume is due to damp and weathering.
A neighbour has told me that you can buy something to spray on this green coating to remove it before the creosote goes on as unless it is removed it will seep back through.
They couldnt remember what it is called but its something they used on a fence they had a couple of years ago.
Does anyone know what this is please?
Thank you.

You're probably right but are you sure the green coating isn't the preservative put into wood? That sometimes seeps out to the surface if it's been heavily treated.
I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

If it's green algae most of it will come off with a stiff brushing (wear a decent mask).
