Unusual Windows 10 update

Options
Last night I hit the Check for updates button and it seemed to install 3 items.
But it still said:

You're not up to date
Your device is missing important security and quality fixes.

I hit the update button again - it thought about it for a short while, but didn't
install anything, and returned to the You're not up to date message.
I repeated this multiple times.
In between the repeats, I did a couple of resets.
But the result was always the same.

When I did View update history, the latest update was at 20/12/2021.

Then I noticed that a message flashed up for about 2 seconds, before it returned to the
You're not up to date message.
It was too fast for me to read, but I eventually got a photo of it.

So it looked like it wanted to do an install, but immediately aborted this (after about 2 seconds).

Here is the View update history screen:

Install the feature update to version 21H2.

Then make sure auto update is turned on leave it alone.

    Try Belarc Adviser.

The Belarc Advisor (which is free) builds a detailed profile of your installed software and hardware, network inventory, any missing Microsoft hotfixes, anti-virus status, security benchmarks, and displays the results in your Web browser.

All of your PC profile information is kept private on your PC and is not sent to any web server.

Is 21H2 a parallel line of development? If so, should I not stick with the version I've been using?

For the last few months, the updates have been automatic. Could the last update have changed a setting?
I've looked in Settings>Update and cannot see an option for Auto Update. Is it in another part of the system?

As I know so little about Windows, when I get a problem like this, I try to use Microsoft's own facilities with a view to eventually becoming competent with Windows.
Are there any Windows tools that you would recommend for looking at this problem?

No, 21H2 is part of the main update route and is the current version.

I would install the 21H2 update which is the latest feature pack of Windows 10 and then once that is complete any subsequent updates will be able to be installed. It isn't a separate stream so you don't have to worry about that.

    I've now installed 21H2.

As this is the first time I've knowingly installed a Features Update, are there any important checks I should make?

    No need to.

Unless you're part of the tin-foil-hat brigade and try to lock down Windows' "reporting" features then the default 21H2 install should be good to go. :)
