Equifax Account Verification

Today I tried to create an Equifax account, but at the last step, it came up with a message saying that they needed to verify my identity. It then gave a number to ring. When I rang the number, I was told I would need to send copies of personal ID which I am not keen to do. Is this usual? What reasons could they have for not being able to verify my ID? Many thanks in anticipation!

You may not have supplied sufficient ID during the sign up process.
They need to be sure that they're dealing with the right person - and if you're the right person, you'll be able to supply the ID. It's standard and nothing to be paranoid about.1 -
Thanks for the reply. The only thing I can think of is that when I entered my postcode to look up my address, it came up with my address but minus the village name, only the nearest town. Maybe this has caused the confusion?0

I had to do something similar with Experian when I first moved to the UK as I had a very thin credit file and they needed to be sure I was the person I said I was. I understand the hesitation but there is nothing nefarious about it given you initiated the process - it's a fairly standard request under GDPR rules to request ID to ensure that the request for personal information comes from the individual the information relates to.1
