Equifax Account Verification

Today I tried to create an Equifax account, but at the last step, it came up with a message saying that they needed to verify my identity. It then gave a number to ring. When I rang the number, I was told I would need to send copies of personal ID which I am not keen to do. Is this usual? What reasons could they have for not being able to verify my ID? Many thanks in anticipation!

  • You may not have supplied sufficient ID during the sign up process.

They need to be sure that they're dealing with the right person - and if you're the right person, you'll be able to supply the ID. It's standard and nothing to be paranoid about.

Thanks for the reply. The only thing I can think of is that when I entered my postcode to look up my address, it came up with my address but minus the village name, only the nearest town. Maybe this has caused the confusion?

I had to do something similar with Experian when I first moved to the UK as I had a very thin credit file and they needed to be sure I was the person I said I was. I understand the hesitation but there is nothing nefarious about it given you initiated the process - it's a fairly standard request under GDPR rules to request ID to ensure that the request for personal information comes from the individual the information relates to.
