Just try getting them repaired, though. A year or so ago, the main bearing on my 10yo washing machine wore out, and it was making an 'orrible noise when spinning. OK, I'll get it repaired, I thought. Phoned the repair department of the shop from which I'd bought it. They refused point-blank to repair it. Not economically viable, they said.
    and:
Did you have to pay a call-out fee to have the machine repair declared to be not economically viable?
There's a small company, (two middle-aged guys, I think) near me who fix washing machines and tumble dryers and other white goods. A flat rate for labour inc. callout plus parts. I've used them a couple of times.
You might have the same near you.

No. I just described the problem over the phone. The fellow I spoke to diagnosed the problem from the description. That was enough for him.

  • Again, today I was visited by an appliance repair outfit.

Price of call out to repair noisy cooker hood £90. Quote for repair £429.05. Total £519.99.

The replacement cooker hood cost £348.99 and my electrician will fit if I cannot for £70. Total £418.99.

Which? likes people to repair but rarely is it price-effective.
I have osteoarthritis in my hands so I speak my messages into a microphone using Dragon. Some people make "typos" but I often make "speakos".

For part only Motor Group Assembly £404.46. NAC (Domestic Appliances) Limited.

    The entire hood cost
£348.99 from Appliances Direct including carriage.

Again and again, I find that repair is not cost-effective.

We subscribe to Which and use it often.  My husband wont buy anything without consulting it.  The package he has gives us free legal advice about consumer issues and he’s used this a few times.

It isn’t for everyone but we’ve never been let down with their advice.

We don’t have any big spends coming up apart from a new tv.  Our current one is 15 years old and it will turn up its toes eventually.  Which has lots of good advice on what’s available these days.

I have subscribed on and off (currently off) a few times. I know they used to do the free legal advice. Is that still included in the standard subscription or do you have to pay extra?

Sorry I didn’t see this earlier.  We have standard subscription plus a bit extra for legal advice. Not sure of what this exactly because they do change their terms and conditions occasionally.

My husband has used their legal advice on quite a few consumer issues and has been impressed with them.

Out of interest they cannot advise if you have an issue with selling, just as a consumer.

    Hope this helps
