Paying a credit card with another cc

Hi everyone. If I used a family members credit card for a purchase. Can I use my own credit card to pay it off? Or will I be charged?

Background-  complete on our first home on the 4th.
Need to purchase some things ready for when we get in. I've read it's best to avoid any credit card spending in case of a another credit check before releasing funds. It's about £600 and I can clear this within one month. although  it's rare that this happens it has in some cases I cannot take the risk of using my own!

  • If its an EXISTING card it should be absolutely fine, the advice is more for applying for NEW lines of credit.

In the example you give above the simple answer is no. The long answer is "maybe you can do a balance transfer" but many companies wont allow it between two cards in different names.

I know it should be fine but the SHOULD is still there. I've always been a worrier who thinks worst case scenario 😣😣

People use their credit cards all the time (myself included), especially ones where you get points/cashback for everyday spending, I have never seen advice anywhere that states never use an existing credit card whilst applying for a mortgage.  Happily used mine no issue a few years back.

As per the above, there's nothing wrong with spending on an existing card prior to a mortgage, it's taking out a new line of credit that can upset things.  You may be able to do a balance-transfer - strictly speaking most cards won't let you transfer to/from a card in someone else's name, but anecdotally, people have been able to do it by going online rather than over the phone.  Assuming, of course, that you have a BT offer available to you.  And there may well be a fee to pay.
But if you can clear it within a month, would it not be far simpler all round to just give the £600 to your relative?  This would avoid a lot of faffing around, and avoid any potential BT fees.

Your mortgage company will look at the balances outstanding on your cards as reported to the CRAs at the time of assessing your application. They work on an assumption you are repaying x% per month and that goes into their affordability calculator.

New lines of credit certainly spook them... adding to existing lines of credit will depend on how close you are on the affordability calculator. If you are talking £600 then they'll be thinking can you afford that extra £18 a month (or whatever) on top of the mortgage etc? To be honest if you are so close to the maximum affordability that such a small movement could break it then you may want to reconsider anyway.

You cannot technically "pay" one credit card with another credit card however you can do a balance transfer which has a very similar effect but normally comes with a fee of around 3%.

A bank is more likely to be concerned about reading that you are trying to hide debts from them than seeing you've increased your used balance by £600

I think you will find that you are not be able to use a credit card to pay a CC bill.

Asking a 3rd party to buy the goods & then pay them back is going to open a real can of worms should anything be wrong with the items.
As they will have to do all the leg work & expect any chance of S75 to be out of the window.

Do not worry using your own card it will not cause a problem. Just think if you used your debit card would it matter? They know that people need to spend when moving.
