Does anyone have recent 2021 experience of avoiding these for ferry travel and getting a refund instead?  All the information seems to relate to airlines and plane tickets or package holidays, but surely there must be some advice and help for other forms of travel?

My understanding is that your rights for ferry bookings are largely analogous to flights, i.e. if your sailing is cancelled then you have refund rights but if it goes ahead but you cancel then you don't have any such entitlement.  What's the scenario you have in mind?

  • As the above poster says their probably isn't any difference in rights for ferry travel compared with flights or any other travel booking regarding refunds and credits notes and vouchers.

Your post is very vague though so if you want advice it would be best giving details of the specific circumstanes you are referring to.

I think you would need to look at the terms of booking you signed up to when you made the booking.

If you booked a non-refundable / transferable crossing and were unable to travel then you're probably looking at having to claim on your travel insurance.   If the ferry actually made it's crossing then they fulfilled their side of the contract so wold argue you are not due for a refund.  It's the passengers responsibility to make sure they meet the entry criteria of the country they are travelling to.

If the ferry crossing was cancelled then you would have a very strong case for a full refund.  Accepting a travel credit is dodgy as as soon as you accept it any booking made with it would be classed as using a voucher, so any future refund (even if they cancelled) would only have to be offered as credit
