Corrections on Credit File

Options
I received an 'update' from Clearscore asserting an update to my electoral roll address. This update was entirely wrong so I set about trying to correct it as I was about to apply for a new card soon.  I obtained confirmation from the Council Electoral Office in e mail and so opened a case with Equifax from whom Clearscore told me all data is obtained.  They said a few days later the case was 'resolved' so I assumed it was sorted, but a few days after received the news that 'a correction has been removed' and that my credit score, previously 856 was now a little over 600.  Nothing else has changed in any way so I have to assume this drop is because I tried to correct someone else's error and it feels very unfair...I've been trying to get my score reverted back to the previous very respectable one but e mails and calls are like wading through treacle.  My question is..can anyone suggest how I might go about sorting this out.  It turns out according to someone on the phone yesterday the incorrect address still comes up in Equifaxs' database and needs to be physically changed.  Should I perhaps write to them setting everything out...and additionally is it likely they will reinstate my score as it was reduced based on the premise of my altering an address.  After years of nurturing my score I'm devastated at this drop...thankyou for any advice.

Ignore the score - it's not important, just a gimmick that only you see.

Is your address incorrect, or is it just the comment that says your address has changed  If the latter, it's nothing to worry about. If the address itself is incorrect, that needs to be corrected.
  • Ignore the score and focus on correcting the underlying data - this is what lenders see, not the number. Equifax can't and won't change the score, but even if they did it would mean absolutely nothing.

If Equifax haven't corrected your ER details to your satisfaction, then you need to lodge a formal complaint (which it sounds like you already have?). Changes can take some time to propagate through the reporting system, so it might take a few weeks to be resolved, but if it doesn't then you'll need to keep prodding them until it gets sorted. I'd also double check you don't have any "notices of correction" placed on your file - Equifax are known to put these on your file, even if you don't request them to do so, and this can also cause issues with your ability to get credit if not removed.
  • @Deleted_User and @PRAISETHESUN .....Thanks to you both.....the update that appeared in my report from clearscore asserted that it was my electoral roll address that had been updated...what it showed was actually a missing word 'Stables' meaning I had now been attributed with my next door neighbour's, which I guessed would certainly throw up a discrepancy that would mean rejection for any card...so originally I complained about that.
Yesterday I spoke to Equifax ostensibly because of the reduction in my score ( I'm glad to hear (thankyou) that it doesn't matter), but the person I spoke to re-opened the case that'd been closed last week and sent me an attachment pulled from Equifax's database, that presumably a potential lender would see and sure enough, the address is still missing 'Stables'...so I had a private rant....then re-sent the e mail I'd received from the electoral roll office showing the correct address, also my bank statement showing the same, accompanied by a further complaint insisting that it be rectified ASAP and wondering why after almost a week of stress trying to get responses and the mistake rectifed, it still appears as incorrect.  The last e mail I recvd from Equifax stated that 'notice of correction removed' ( I think, I've stupidly lost that one), so not sure if that's a good thing or otherwise.  Perhaps when and if I call up again I should inquire about that. ?
I'm glad to hear I seem to have done everything I can and yes I will stay on the case and call up again if it isn't sorted out soon.

    Thankyou so very much. J
