Speeding fine abroad! Help

Hi

Hope everyone is doing.

Several months ago I went on a quick holiday to Tenerife, to get around the island I hired a out a car for a few days. Everything went well without much issue however, several weeks back i recieved a speeding fine thru the post, a months or so after my trip claiming that was doing 88kmh on a 80km road.

There a few discrepancies on their notice;

- firstly they completely misspelled my name, my name is "Athisham Iqbal" and they have spelled it "Athisman Iqbal". Could that be a basis for not to pay it and ignore it?
-secondly, the fine is in Spanish (a language that I don't understand) so it's difficult to even get whether it's legit or a fake. Although, using Google lens I have determined that the fine is from a legit source.
- the images that they have provided of me "speeding" are awful, pretty much most of the page is black and grainy (including the car) besides the license plate, how convenient.

My question is, do I have to pay the fine? Is there any way around this unfortunate incident and not paying for it ? Should I respond, or play dumb that I never recieved it as the letter had no signed receipt to it. If questioned, I could always claim that the name was wrong to begin with.
I can also cancel my credit card so that they don't charge 100 euros to it.
Should I do such a step or try a different way to get around it? Any feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Please see attached images for more information on the fine, and I welcome your support and guidance in this incident.

Kind regards
Ati

  • The spelling and the language aren't going to help you here (and what language would you expect Spanish speeding tickets to be in?)

    I suspect that if you ignore it you're not likely to hear much more from them, so as long as you don't intend to ever visit Spain again (or possibly mainland Europe if they end up sharing more of their records) that's definitely an option.

    On the other hand, given that you haven't denied it was you, it's not clear why you';d not just pay the relatively small fine and move on. It's €50 by the way, not €100.
