Standing Charges on Gas And Electricity supplies

We are constantly being encouraged to reduce energy use to save the planet, but reducing my use of gas in particular I don't see a significant reduction in my bill due to the standing charges. A number of days each month my standing charge can be greater than the charge for gas used.
In other words I am being penalised for trying to reduce my reliance on gas!!
