Getting a new slate roof in the North?

Slate will be reused in one way or another. Broken slates can be cut down for eaves and half slates. Builders can always use slate pieces for pinning up etc.BornTooHula said:Thanks - this is all really useful information.
I'll reach out to a couple of different roofers and see if I can get comparative quotes. From what I've seen online, it looks as though some Spanish slate is great, but others not so good. Just another thing to watch out for I suppose.
I am worried about getting a roofer who will take off lots of perfectly good Welsh slate from my roof, potentially take it away to resell on the sly, and fit me with an unnecessary complete roof of Spanish slate.0 -
In my opinion, slate roofs are better because they are referred to as a "forever roof" since owners will need only install one throughout their lifetime, whereas shingles might have to be changed 2 to 3 times. Another advantage of slate roofing is that it can boost your home's resale value due to its inherent beauty and durability. Slate is a beautiful roofing material that will complement the architectural home decor and preserve its appeal over time. Other advantages of slate roofs include natural fire and mould resistance, as well as its low water absorption, which makes it extremely resistant to frostbite and breaking caused by freezing.

man showing me how to split slate in LLnaberis . I asked him if he ever found fossils in them . No he stated . Slate is older than life itself . Long long before any creatures roamed . Welsh slate can last forever if it has been looked after . If allowed to ratle and nails loose then it can crumble . Try to keep welsh may need to replace the timbers and re slate .

I completely agree with your viewpoint. Overall, slate is a fantastic roofing material for any home. It not only looks great, but it also lasts a long time. I will not recommend a spanish slate roof to you because it is soft and contains harmful iron pyrites. Roofing tile is another option to explore. Tiles are less expensive and available in a wider range of colours and patterns, but slate roof tiles are a more energy efficient and long-lasting option.Dixie6549 said:In my opinion, slate roofs are better because they are referred to as a "forever roof" since owners will need only install one throughout their lifetime, whereas shingles might have to be changed 2 to 3 times. I'm the other side of the Pennines so no help with roofers, but I had a terrace roof done, about half your size for just under £4k so your 7-12k sounds about right. This was new membrane, lathes but reusing most of the slates.
I've just had the front half of my current terrace (stone roof) relaid, renailed with new membrane & lathes for £2k which I thought was reasonable.
£30k sounds miles off, unless there are access issues etc0
