Just Moved, First Time Renter

Hi guys hope you're all ok

First time renter here, moved in yesterday and sorting out bills etc. Just have a few questions I couldn't find the answer to so hope you don't mind.

So the gas/electric is with EON. Owners I'm renting said they were fixed and paid ~£50pm which is obviously amazing.

If i ring EON to transfer to my name I take it I won't be able to take that price on? Would they have took it with them when they moved?

And if not I take it EON will stick me on a standard tarriff which going by the guides is the cheapest I'll get at the moment? And I assume all standard tariffs have the same price cap at every company so it doesn't really matter if or to who I transfer to?

You may have to insist that Eon put you on the standard variable tariff.  Energy companies are trying to push new customers onto expensive fixed deals if they can get away with it.

Cheers every yeah have meter readings from when I moved in.

OK so I'll ask for a standard tarriff - is the price going to be the same at every company since its hitting the cap? So my girlfriend has Octopus Energy so will I be able to move to them from Eon and take advantage of the £50 credit? Thanks again

Congratulations on your new home!

Make sure that you've taken meter readings today. Ideally you will have agreed these with your landlord. You will use these as your opening readings on your new account.

They may have been paying £50pm but that's quite low by current standards, even for a small flat. Do oyu have electricity and gas, or just electricity? (Or something else!)

When you ring E.ON you'll start a new contract. you will have to choose from their current tariffs and won't be able to keep the one used previously. As others have said, stick with the standard variable tariff - if it's E.ON, the tariff is called EnergyPlan. If it's E.ON Next, the tariff is called Next Flex.

Once you've set up your contract with E.ON you can look at switching. I don't think Octopus are offering their Flexible Octopus tariff to switchers (not easily) and all their fixed tariffs are quite a bit more expensive than the cap. You might find you're better off staying with E.ON, at least for a few months.
