B&q cutting service

Options
How everyone! I'm planning on doing a DIY shaker style kitchen using MDF for the paneling.

I hear b&q cut free of charge up to 15cuts. I haven't measured how many different cuts I'll need but it's definitely more than 15!

(4 per door plus 1 for the draw)
I've roughly guessed around 94 strips (multiple sizes) I got a lot of cuboards in the kitchen 😂

Does anyone know how much it is after the first 15cuts?

We're on a budget and need to work out what my total cost for supplies will be :)

No idea about bq but my local timber yard cut for free.

Thank you! I will call up local ones too ask!
  • Fitting an entire kitchen without the ability to cut materials on site seems very ambitious! I'm not convinced I'd be able to calculate the dimensions of every piece needed in advance. How many trips back and forth are you willing to make?

I think the job would go much faster with suitable tools available on site. If you don't want the expense of buying tools, could you borrow or hire what you would need?

Are you sure it was 15 cuts for free, I thought it was something like 4?

The last time I tried to use a B&Q cutting service it was a right PITA. On the website it says no appointment needed, turn up any time, so we did only to be told the person doing it was only available during certain, limited times of the day, ie, 2-4pm etc, so a wasted journey that day, so we turned up the following day during those times and they were off and nobody else was available, even though we'd rang earlier to confirm. Gave up in the end an used a local Travis Perkins.

Don't use B&Q for those types of cuts. You'll be luck if they cut all the doors to an accurate enough size and it'll stand out on doors etc.

Are you sure it will work out cheaper doing it this way. You'll need moisture resistent MDF. Getting an acceptable painted finish on MDF is very hard. You'll go through a lot of primer, paint etc. Ideally, you'll want a sprayer to achieve a good finish.

I'd advise getting a small piece of MDF and attempting to make a door and paint it to make sure you're happy with the result before commiting to doing a full kitchen that way

In using frenchic furniture paint which I've used plenty of times before, it's had primer in the paint already so not worried about that. My concern is just getting the right sizes of wood. I might got hire a cutting machine and do it myself to be on the safe side.

Your local timber yards may do the cuts for you. Just tell them what you are planning and ask how accurate their cuts are.

Bear in mind that say 70 pieces out of a sheet of MDF does not mean 70 cuts. Apart from the fact that all of the pieces have 4 sides. You might do 3 rips down the board, then stack them before cutting across a few times.

No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Thank for that! It's a good point. I'm going to have to just pop in with my measurements and ask them how much it will

You need really accurate cutting, so you’ll need to stand by the machine measuring everything once it is cut. Then getting into an argument when they are not right!
