Lloyds Bank Credit Card Inconsistent Contactless

Options
Recently I got a new Lloyds Bank Mastercard and contactless doesn't always work. I end up having to enter a pin even though the payment is below £30. Thing is, my Barclaycard Visa works perfectly on the same device. I tested it at a few retailers who got a bit annoyed with the Lloyds Bank card failing on contactless.

Has anyone out there experienced similar with their Lloyds Bank mastercard? Someone did suggest perhaps I need to complete a certain number of pin transactions before contactless will work properly on the card. Don't remember doing the same with a new Barclaycard, one pin transaction was enough to go contactless.

  • I have the Lloyds cashback one and never had that issue, don't remember entering PIN more than once. I tend to use my phone more though than the card

contactless cards are designed to request a pin a randomly to check it is the user, regardless if it is under the contactless limit - so will depend on the risk systems in use.  As such users may ask for a pin after x number of transactions, or after the contactless transactions have accumulated to x amount, or x length of time since a pin was entered etc.

From personal experience they also tend to ask for the PIN more frequently with a new card, although it has been a few years now as for the last four years I have used Google Pay instead.
  • I might try that then. Do something like 10 transactions using pin instead of contactless and see if it will make a difference.
