Additional driver insurance

Hi I have a quote to add an additional driver to my car insurance for 11days. The quote is £59.54. £20 of that is admin fee. I would be grateful to hear if that is reasonable. It seems a lot to me, especially, in fact the admin fee!! Thanks in advance for any comments.

I was charged about £20 many years ago so on that basis £60 doesn't seem excessive.  The admin fees just seem to be a way to get more money.  I informed a travel insurer of medical tests my wife had.  Despite the condition being on their list of 'accepted' conditions they charged me for telling them.  Their policy does state that any medical treatment must be reported.

The admin charge will be in your policy document and will apply to any changes you may make.

My company do not charge of you make a change online. but do if you phone.
  • Interesting. Thank you both. I think I’m just going to have to suck it up!

Does the other driver have insurance with “driving other cars” on?
note this is third party only !!
have you checked separate temp insurance for them?

You chose the admin fee at the outset of the policy, in theory you can go for a cheap company that charges you fees or a more expensive company that is fee free... in practice due to different companies ratings it doesnt always work like that.

So the real question is if £39 is reasonable for 11 days of a temporary additional driver... the answer is who knows... if they've 24 been banned for drink driving, got a ton of points for speeding, criminal record, a dozen fault claims in the last 5 years and your car is a ferrari then its an absolute bargain. In other circumstances less so.

The reality is its the price you've been quoted, you should get counter quotes of getting a stand alone short term policy and compare prices. Personally I'd also consider asking your insurers to quote to add then as a named driver and not just a TAD if there is any chance of needing them to be able to drive for more than 11 days as the price difference may not be massive.

DOC off their own policy is another option if you are happy to risk your car but make 100% sure they have this cover... if you let them drive and it turns out you are mistaken then not only is there the risk of a criminal offence but you'd also be at risk of having to personally pay for any damage they cause.
