I received a letter welcoming a new business account being set up with my home address (it’s from countingup offering a business account).

I’ve checked on companies house and the company was registered 2 days ago. It has my address details as the company’s address.

It’s not me or anyone I know. Nationality is Hungarian. I’ve reported to actionfraud but not sure what else to do?

Return the letter by writing "Return To Sender, Addressee Unknown" on the front of the envelope and sticking it in a post box (no need to put postage on it etc).

Doesnt always work first time and other letters may be received in the interim due to timing but just do the same with them, but it will trigger the business (particularly if you mean a business bank account) to investigate and most likely suspend the account in the first instance.

For this sort of thing the agreement is FS companies do the investigation and pass to the police if there is a case to answer

As above but also ring them to let them know.

I think Companies House has a specific contact to report this sort of thing, if you check their website.

Have a read of this complete the form and return it to them.  This is specifically for your scenario.

You can complete this form if:

    • you’ve been appointed as a company officer without your knowledge or consent

    • your registered office has been changed without the company’s knowledge or consent

    • the company’s name has been changed without permission

    • your address has been used without your permission (as a company’s

registered office or officer’s service address)

    • the people involved in the company are in dispute (such as directors,

      shareholders and PSCs)

  • Thanks for the form.

I now have also received a letter from companies house (on the envelope). Do I open or just mark it as return to sender?

It doesn't really matter, if you're going to be contacting Companies House anyway to tell them.

Some people may disagree, but if the letter has your address on it then I would open it if I were you.

I always open all mail that is delivered through our letterbox and that has our address on it - irrespective of the name of the person it is addressed to.  I want to know what is happening.

You still report it to Companies' house.
