hi i have bought a carpet from a national company and paid cash around £4000 for carpet and underlay on the promise it would be laid before christma 2020 it was october the 1st and i was assured that my carpet would be done so i got on and decorated to match the new carpet that was going to go in all the rooms stairs and landing , i removed all my old carpets and underlay to dispose of so it wasn't in the way looking a mess over the Christmas period , anyway i had everything all looking good then i got a phone call telling me that the carpet i ordered hadn,t been made yet and did i want to pick another colour !? no thankyou i replied i have painted my house right through rushing to meet your delivery promise and the colour i have painted is to go with the grey carpets i have paid for anyway and eventually i got the carpets fitted halfway through february after many arguements and emails and phone calls i had to pay the fitters around £500 and the TAPI Carpets paid me that back as a good will....and as christmas 2021 aproached i moved my furniture around to get the room ready for a christmas with carpets and i noticed my carpets look awful tapi sent a man from a carpet inspection firm who said it was caused by walking on and flattening so its my fault ,i was hoping if anyone can tell me if i can do anything about this as the carpet store say they are not doing anything i have attached image TIA p.s this is after a deep cleen and i have much worse photos showing the pulls and bobbles

OP the direct answer is to have a carpet expert look at the carpet and give something in writing to say the carpet isn't up to standard as after 6 months you'd have to show the goods didn't conform to the contract and in this instance it would be in terms of durability.

It does look like an area where people would walk through but only you know how often this happens and whether it's lasted a reasonable amount of time.

How the carpet was advertised would also come in to play, usually advice is given as to the place the carpet is suitable for, i.e a carpet might be advised for a bedroom but different carpet might be advised for a heavy use area such as a hallway.

Just to add looking at 2 random carpets on their site they have a wear guarantee, did your carpet come with this?

There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it, going by that photo.  So you've had a goodwill gesture for the delay and original inconvenience, and now the issue is that almost a year on, you're unhappy with the appearance of the carpet?

How have you only just noticed they look awful, given you'd lived with them for 10 months up to that point?  Surely the area in your photograph is a higher-traffic area, and all that's happened is that having moved furniture, you're seeing the difference between fresh, clean carpet that's been under furniture for a year, and carpet that's been walked across thousands of times in the same period?

Your consumer rights are such that you can get the carpet independently inspected, and if it's shown that the carpet is faulty or has been laid incorrectly, the retailer will have to provide a solution.  You'd have to pay for that inspection and would be able to claim it back in the event it showed a fault, but in all honesty, (and I appreciate it's only one photograph), I can't see anything beyond normal wear and tear in a high traffic area.  Pulls and bobbles are part of that as well - you can't expect to walk across carpets thousands of times and not expect signs of flattening and wear.

A carpet like that won't ever look uniform - it's of a colour and sheen that will show up every little change in direction and strand height as it's used.

Are you suggesting that the carpet has not been supplied to the customer in (ahem) a durable medium:)

Would walking on all the other areas help even it out?

One thing you might try first is an old-fashioned carpet sweeper.  They're really good for scrubbing up all the hairs and stuff that get caught in the fibres and which most vacuums won't pick up - sometimes a good bit of old-fashioned mechanical agitation is better than all these fancy cyclonic-HEPA-no-bag gadgets that people spend hundreds of pounds on.  They also do a good job of sweeping all the fibres and might help pick-up some of the flattened areas.

There was a similar post a couple of months ago regarding what looks like a very similar carpet with the same issue.  Has the OP posted again with a new user id, or is this a different problem?

That looks as I'd expect it to.  The right hand portion is flattened, the left is untouched.  Of the flattened part, half is flattened by the rug, the other half by walking on it - at least that's what it looks like.  Have you used a carpet sweeper or a stiff, clean brush on it, to try and perk it up a bit?

Ultimately, if you want to pursue it, you will need to get it inspected.  Only you can decide if it's worth further outlay.  In the context of £4,000 of carpet, you might determine that another couple of hundred quid for an inspection and report is worth it, but from what you've posted here, I fear you'll be wasting your money because it just looks like carpet that's been walked on.
