Car problems!

I brought a car (Skoda Octavia 2008) from a mechanics/trader 6 weeks ago for £1500. The engine has seized up and the car is no longer working. The mechanic was unable to fix it as he was too busy so he gave me £300 back and told me it would cost about £150 for a second hand engine and about £150 to fit. I accepted this refund on the condition that it didnt cost any more than £300 to fix. Having now taken the car to another mechanic I have been quoted £1700. Can anyone tell me what my rights are as a consumer please?

You have 2 lots of rights

    1) As an individual to take someone with you who can monitor your car buying decisions given your historic lack of luck in this area

    2) As a consumer in this case you've used your right by accepting the dealers offer of part refund and to handle the repair yourself - though how anyone could consider that an engine replacement could be done for £150 is beyond me - maybe the best warning you ignored was the fact that he wouldn't/couldn't do the work himself if it was 'only £150'

I would hand the £300 back to the mechanic/trader and thank them for their quote of £300 to source, supply and fit a second hand engine, and ask how long the work is going to take them!

    They clearly saw you coming!

Were you given anything in writing regarding the £300 refund?? It was extremely naïve on your behalf to think you could get even a second hand engine for £300, let alone someone to fit it, but I think the trader has deliberately played on your naivety here! I would be going back to the dealer, handing back the £300 and telling them that you would either like the car repairing under the consumer rights act, or a full refund of £1200 (deduction of £300 for 6 weeks use).

Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

..I think you have been "had"....???

  • Did you let the oil leak out of the engine, like you did with the gearbox on the Range Rover?
