word document into open office

My friend has had an email sent with a microsoft word document attachment he needs to work on, he only has wordpad and openoffice, how can he open the document using openoffice?
I am sure I have seen it on here before but could not find it on the search

Hi
He has to download the attachment onto his computer.
Then open the OpenOffice word processor.
Then just File > Open
to open the file.
