Hi all

Trying to number crunch for my mum right now - she's paying £75 a month for gas and electricity with British Gas and her fixed rate ends in two weeks. She's been significantly in credit as she daren't use the heating a lot, so we'd hoped it'd get a bit easier for her next year. How wrong we were.

She's been quoted the equivalent of £177 to switch to British Gas' cheapest tariff for fixed rate (138% increase), or £111 on standard rate.

I've number crunched using the KwH and cost in price comparison sites, and get the cheapest at £258 with Ovo Energy and £275 with Scottish Energy.

This seems such a leap, is it worth fixing based on those numbers?

The problem is that those figures are all based on what the supplier assumes you'll use over the next year and may all be different, so forget monthly figures and look at unit rates.
The answer will then be "possibly", depending on how much the cap raises by. If it's 50% then anything less than that is a winner.

£111 or £177. Doesn't seem much to choose with those!
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

What are the unit costs and standing charges .
Compare those numbers as they are real not estimates .
The standard rate is going to rise significantly in April . but guesswork as to how much .
