Help...water won't stop from washing machine inlet!

Hi all, looking for some advice if possible....

I was removing our washing machine this morning as we have a new one arriving. I closed the valve as pictured then disconnected the inlet hose from the machine but water started to gush out of the hose at high volume and would not stop so I've had to turn the water off at the mains for now. Is there anything obvious I could have done wrong or is it likely a faulty valve which needs replacing? There's been a very small leak from the pipework at the valve for a while but it was so minor I didn't do anything with it.

Thanks in advance

  • 1. Quite possibly the blue plastic lever handle is slipping on the spindle, rather than turning it.
    2. In the centre of the handle will be a small cross headed screw.  Undo it, remove the handle, and turn the spindle directly with a spanner, grips or pliers.
    3. If all else fails, get another washing machine valve (e.g. Screwfix 51231) and fit it.  To fit it:
3a. Make sure the water is off at the main stop !!!!!!.
3b. Undo the nut at the left hand side of the valve (per your photograph).
3c. Remove the old valve, and fit the new one, using the old nut and olive on the copper pipe.
