Financial information needed for Power of Attorney.

I’m not sure if this is the correct place for this query, but here goes!

I have been granted PoA for an elderly aunt who is currently in a care home. The PoA is for Continuing and Welfare under Scots law. My problem is that I can find no details of any bank accounts or other financial arrangements that my aunt had. She must have at least one bank account into which her pension would be paid. Can anyone suggest a way of finding this information? My aunt can’t help, as she is suffering from severe dementia. Obviously I would need to provide proof that I had been granted PoA, but is it a case of my having to write to every bank that I can think of to ask if she has an account with them?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Would the care home not have some information if she is paying for her care. You would need to provide the POA paperwork before they would give you the information. Who paid for the POA/Solicitor?

If she has severe dementia, so I'm presuming she's not just been diagnosed?  You've only just been granted POA,  so who made decisions and managed finances prior to this time?
Surely the local authority social services ( they probably did  a financial assessment  regarding liability for social  care charges ) or if self funded the care home must have details , as GSS20 said.
    What about the DWP?
  • Thank you for the advice. At the moment her care home fees are being paid for by social services, and one of the reasons that I need to find out about her finances is because they are wanting me to complete a financial assessment for her.

The decision to go for PoA was taken months ago when my aunt had some capacity. Unfortunately, due to covid, there have been long delays in processing applications (running to several months). It was during this time that her dementia got significantly worse.

The solicitor who undertook the PoA work still has to be paid! That is another reason for trying to discover my aunts financial details.

I hadn’t thought of contacting the DWP, but they must know which bank account her pension was being paid into, so thanks for that suggestion.

once again, thank you for taking the time to respond.

    Regards,
