Insurance asking for proof of purchase

Hi guys.
I have today received an email from my vehicle insurance provider asking me to provide proof of the purchase date of my vehicle. Which I have absolutely no problem in providing.
However I have been in ownership of the particular vehicle since October 2020, my policy with my current provider since December 2021
So, my question really is. What difference does it make to my current provider when I purchased my vehicle. My business with them commenced in December 2021, so technically my vehicle purchase date has nothing to do with them!

Someone please enlighten me.

My policy was purchased via Confused.com which doesn’t ask for a specific date of vehicle purchase. Just month and Year and was never asked the exact purchase date when I spoke to the provider on the phone.
As already stated I have absolutely no problem in providing the requested information. I just don’t really understand what it has got to do with an insurance provider that I have only been with since December.0 -
They can ask whatever they feel is appropriate for their business, and if you don't answer it they may be able to cancel the policy, which isn't what you want to happen, so regardless of their reasons I'd just give them the information.

Insurers/brokers are entitled to validate the data you've provided to them, your premiums are currently based on you having 14-15 months experience of this vehicle. If that duration proves to be wrong they'd be entitled to adjust the premium to reflect the correct duration plus the admin costs for doing so.
There is a growing number of brokers/intermediaries that are selling on price alone via aggregators and then seem to be more firmly validating quote details with substantial costs for "errors". If your evidence confirms your purchase in Oct 2020 then you've got nothing to worry about... if you made a mistake and actually it was Dec 2020 then expect a bill.1 -
Ok thanks guys, as I said I have no issues providing the data. According to the information on the statement of fact they sent a copy of, the ownership of the vehicle was 1st October 2020, but actual date was 5th. However as you can see from the screenshot of the quotation the comparison site it doesn’t ask for specific date, nor was This information requested when I confirmed all details over the phone when taking out the policy.I will get the requested information sent over to them asap
thanks again for your advice0 -
Having always used mainstream insurers I have never, not once in 20 years or more, been asked to provide proof of date of purchase when taking out a policy.
Unfortunately there are threads on this forum to do with the bottom-feeders of the car insurance market charging daft admin fees to "correct" a purchase date by a few days, because that's how they make their money - they quote really low to get to the top of the comparison sites, then rake in fees once people sign up.0 -
I must admit it is the 1st time in 20 years of driving I have been asked to provide proof of the purchase date. Never heard anything so ridiculous in all my life. But as I have been threatened with ‘if you don’t provide this we will either update to the date we believe you took ownership or cancel your policy. The latter part is a little extreme if you ask me.If anyone is wondering who the provider is so they can avoid them when it comes to your renewal it is RIAS (sister company of AGEAS)0
