EDF Price Rise Estimates V's Martins

Hi there,  

We've just got off the phone to EDF after submitting our last meter readings.  The good news is we do appear to have cut our normal winter consumption significantly.  

However having had a chat with the guy on the phone,   I know Martin has suggested that we should expect a £50% price rise,  this would take my bill from an already staggering £300 a month to a "We really can't afford"  £450 per month!   (We are looking at ways to reduce this but it's not what the thread is about)  

Anyway the guy on the phone said EDF are currently working to the assumption that the rises will be as following. 

• Electric From 22p KWH to 44p (100%)
• Gas from 4p KWH to 12p (200%)

As you can see this is hugely above Martins 50% estimate in fact it's a 200% on Gas... 

with a 50% rise i was in big trouble .... with a 100 - 200% rise i simply won't be able to make the numbers work. 

My husband is already stressing enough about energy because he's not working atm, after getting off the phone he's literally gone to the boiler and turned it off at the wall and has announced that jumper are all the heat we can afford and is currently on a collision course with every plug socket we own, turning them off. 

You may laugh but he's informed me that I'm now rationed to 1 cup of coffee a day! and is suggesting that we all move to cold food for lunch/breakfast so we don't turn on the microwave/cookers.  

Please What is going on here? was the guy on the phone mistaken or just having a laugh? is this likely or even remotely possible? 

50% was gonna hurt and dent our lifestyle a bit anything more than 100% and we are genuinely going to have make hard choices.

Perhaps trying to encourage you to fix? Did he give you any current "too good to miss" fix rates?

The suppliers are playing games at the moment. In my view, we can expect fixed tariffs to settle once the revised Ofgem Cap is announced next month. It may be that Government intervention (?) will have some downwards effect on the predicted rises. That said, I think that we can all look forward to much higher energy prices in the short term. As far as fixed tariffs are concerned, suppliers can charge what they like. If consumers can find a cheaper deal then they will switch.

There is no doubt cost is going to go up considerably, but the key question is for how long. I understand the government are looking at helping the providers spread the cost to consumers over a longer period - not saving us any money but making it less painful in the short term.

As for the prices you were quoted, well I know Good Energy (who are an uncapped provider) are about to put Electric up to 35.34p KWh and Gas up to 8.32p KWh in a few days' time. Thats uncapped of course but still give you an indication of where things could be heading by April.

Those prices are pretty close to the ones we've been forecasting in this thread, and sound much more likely than the 44p/12p that the EDF CS rep mentioned to the OP.

EDF said my electric was going to increase to 41p/unit back in October last year for the big hike in November unless I fixed, so I did exactly that, but with another provider as they offered cheaper rates
