MSE break in Ireland

Options
I'm owed a few days holiday at work, which need to be used by April 5th or will be lost.

I would really like to get away for a few days, to see some new places and generally wind down etc. One place which I have never visited is Ireland...

...I'm considering a 7 day break to Cork, with a fair amount of emphasis on moneysaving. If anybody knows of any low cost, but reputable hotels in Cork, I'd appreciate your recommendations. I can get my flights for less than £40 return (inc all taxes etc.) with Ryanair, so this isn't really a problem.

Also, any idea's of sights to see in the Cork area would also be appreciated. :)

Many Thanks,

never been, but i have stayed in a few hostels on my travels this year and they are generally cheap and clean. try www.hostelworld.com and check the reviews on their own site and trip advisor.

    have a good time!

Cork is a lovely place to visit, having lived here for 3 weeks I am now an expert ;)
In terms of hotels - the Gresham Metropole is very central, as are both Jury's (inn & hotel). Jury's Cork Hotel is lovely but not necessarily the cheapest.
Moran Silversprings is a bit out of town, as is the Rochestown Park Hotel. If you're looking to stay a bit further out, try the Muskerry Arms in Blarney. There are also quite a lot of B&B places on Western Road, just out of the city centre.

Driving in Cork is not fun, if you're only planning to stay around the city centre I wouldn't bother. Parking is also quite limited & expensive, so if you do hire a car then make sure you get a hotel with parking. The airport is only 7 miles from the city, so a €15-20 cab ride. There is a bus which drops off at the main city centre hotels (called skylink?? maybe google it?)

Sights to see in Cork...... it's quite a cosmopolitan "cafe culture" type of place, you could spend days wandering between coffee shops! It's also quite "foodie" with the english market. Eating out is not necessarily cheap.
There's also Blarney, famous for it's castle & stone - nice little town if you can see past the American tourists, and Kinsale down on the coast is lovely.
If you want any more info please PM me & I'll try to help.
  • Thanks for the great tips so far :)

Lucie, have you heard of the Commodore hotel? If so, what is its reputation like?

    I'll drop you a PM :D

Without the rain you wouldn't have the rainbows !

I came into this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left!
