Also have a look at the Drayton Wiser system - They do two versions, a single channel model for combi boilers, and a two channel for CH/DHW systems. Cheaper than Nest/Hive and you still get an app if you really want one.
Sorry to thread-jack, I've been looking into a smart thermostat and settled on the Drayton Wiser. The best price I can find currently is for the 2 channel although I only need a 1 channel (City plumbing have a sale on). Would there be any problem running a combi boiler on a 2 channel hub with the hot water control sitting idle or is there some unforeseen problem this may cause?

I suspect not. But to be sure, give the Drayton help line a call (or drop them an email).

Her courage will change the world.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

So, to get a straight forward replacement, I'm being pushed to rely on my flaky internet connection. Is there nothing out he that's just as simple as whats on the wall, but with the ability to retain memory in the event of a (frequent) power cut.

Have a look at Le_Kirk's answer in the second post - he's pointed out the 'modern' equivalent to that ol' timer.
The LP722 does the same job, and no more - ie it'll turn the CH and DHW on and off at preset times during the day. No interweb malarkey.
The CH temp is still controlled by the old room 'stat. The LP722 will - I'm pretty sure - have a small battery inside in order to retain the settings in the event of a power cut, so that's your simplest replacement. It's pretty ugly, tho', so won't suit Morgan's (the OP) revamped kitchen!

Can it be used? Pretty sure the answer is 'yes'. BUT, the wiring of the receivers are different between the single and dual channel jobbies, so you need to know what you are doing.
Strongly recommend you hold out for a future sale, or just spend the extra.
Or, you could go 'Hive' for £99, and keep an eye on Fleabay for an unused 'hub' to add later on to get the App features?

The answer from the drayton support people was that it can and if not a professional to take proper advice on how to correctly wire up the 2 channel to run a combi (as Bendy house has said the wiring wont match up to the backplate) As the 1 channel was only £5 more it seems like a price well worth paying to make life easier (£102 vs £97 if anyone was interested).
