Hello everyone..EDIT...**** update on my post below... I applied for JSA, they said I can apply for NIC credits only..I need to get a form NC1.. I cant find it on the Gov website, or online..would my local Jobcentre have one?   Thanks all  Have a good weekend

I posted a few months ago, about my attempts to claim ESA..It turned out I was only entitled to NIC credits, as I didnt qualify for ESA. So I got the credits for 6 months, from April to November 2021, when DWP decided, after a phone assessment, that I was capable of working, so they stopped my credits.. My GP had given me a sicknote up until March 2022, but I just didnt have it in me, to appeal to DWP.. Although I don’t feel significantly better, (I have bereavement stress and depression), I’ve decided I will try to get just a few hours work a week.. If I apply now for new-style JSA, I dont qualify, as I have savings, £14k, and I receive a monthly pension of £558, so I dont qualify for UC either..
Could I apply for JSA, in the hope that they would give me NIC credits for another 6 months?
I get my State Pension in April 2024, and there is a shortfall, so I want my pension to be as much as possible, hence the NIC credits would save me having to pay over £800 per year as a “voluntary contribution”.  I recently spoke to the DWP Future Pension dept about this, they were really helpful.. would appreciate advice again, thank you 😊

Yes, you can apply for NS-JSA and receive NI credits only (I think the form is called JSANC1)
You will, however, still be expected to jump through all the usual JSA hoops, including being available for work and actively seeking employment. You will be expected to 'sign on' fortnightly and show evidence of your work search in exchange for your NI credits, just you won't qualify for or receive any cash benefit payment. There is no limit to the time you can claim NS-JSA credits only, so long as you meet the JSA requirements of actively seeking work. As NI years are credited based on tax years, you should make sure you get your claim in before 6th April (it may be too late for this tax year as you will have gaps depending when your ESA ended). You need to be credited 50 out of 52 weeks in the tax year for that year to qualify towards your state pension.
If you get a part time job, the lower earnings limit (LEL) for NI is £120/week, so for each week you earn £120, you would qualify for NI credit for that week.

Yes you can. You will have to sign a Claimant Commitment and you will have to look for work and evidence this in order to get the credits. There is no 6 month limitation for credits. You will get them for as long as you meet the job search commitment.

Very interesting point, raises the possibility of being entitled to credits even if one doesn’t do the work search. Slightly bizarre.

I’m not clear if anything has changed for new style JSA

Still worth getting in this year though because if OP decides to pay to complete the year the cost will be lower as it will be partially complete.

Same on ESA, NI credits only cannot be sanctioned.

Difference is that you not expected to do much, if anything, on ESA anyway.
