Recycling Till Receipts

I hope this is the right place to ask this question and sorry if it sounds dull!

Can the shiny till receipts (like Tesco/Asda and most shops) be recycled like normal paper?

It doesn't say on them or in shops or on my council's recycle bags. I tend to buy a lot on credit card for the loyalty points so have loads of these receipts. As long as I tear off my card details then I would like to be able to recycle the remaining portions.

Thanks in advance

  • You can't put them in the recycling bins here, they are too small.

When I've sliced up names and addresses from letters (cut up very finely with a pair of nail scissors) I then fold those pieces inside other sheets of newpaper and put the lot into the recycling. The folds of the other papers keep them from being blown around. (Maybe I'm going to too great an extreme  ). Not sure if it's the correct thing to do - but it seems to make sense to me - the basis of them is 'paper without adhesive' so I presume it's allowed.

I wish our local recycling team would do some kind of public roadshow in the Town Centre so that we can visit and ask 'all those burning questions' that occur to us from time to time.

We get paper sacks (small, lunch-bag sized ones) from the hfs occasionally. We save them, and use some to fill with our till receipts, junk mail, etc. Then you can put the whole bag in your recycle bin!

  • Hi
If it is thermal paper - which is what most 'shiny' till receipts are - then you can't recycle it :-( according to this
    http://www.paper.org.uk/info/pdfs/Recycling_for_Businesses.pdf
it says it can damage the paper recycling process! eek!
  • thanks for info.

it seems no-one is too sure!

It was the thermal paper ones I was on about (I just couldn't remember the posh term!)

Think I will contact my council and ask them for advice as it's such a waste if they cannot be. I'll let you know if I find out

    Thanks all

What holds the paper together though to make the sack ... if it's glue you can't recycle it.

  • If you find out you can't recycle them maybe you could use them for something else - such as a paper mache project with the children (if you have children that is) or if you have a solid fuel burner you could save them up to make paper bricks with one of these gadgets http://www.greenshop.co.uk/acatalog/index.html?http%3A//www.greenshop.co.uk/acatalog/Greenshop_online_Log_Makers_156.html&CatalogBody
I haven't really thought about recylcing them. We don't chuck them in the bin but we dont put them in the recycling bag.... who knows where they go.. probally down the back of a sofa or something lol
