Gaps in new windows

Options
Hi all.

Getting some drafts through Windows that were fitted last spring. Its the first winter with them and we're dropping down to 14 degrees on the hive stat in the living room on a morning.

I want to get the window fitters back but want to check my facts incase they try and pull the wool over my eyes.

Ive noticed gaps where the frame meets the window cill on the outside, is this ok or could it cause drafts / noise. Ive attached photos for reference

  • The gap you are looking at is drainage perfectly normal and looks right . Is the cill sealed down (between brick and cill ) that's easy to see . Is the frame sealed to the cill at the back inside ( that's very difficult to know if done well as you're no supposed to be able to see that . The second pic where the corner has been rounded off . I am trying to work out if that's a bay angle or a square post but they've cut the "snot" off the weld to make it tidy . square would have been better but its been overdone a bit . shouldn't cause a drop in internal temp. do you have trickle vents fitted . Wet your hand tonight and have a good feel around for cold spots . If there are internal trims making good between what came out and whats gone in .That may just cover space without insulation and could be either cavity cold or outside cold .

    Hi there.

Thank you for your indepth reply. The window is a square bay window with a porch to the right which involved a full size upvc door and glass pains either side.

The cil is sealed to the brickwork with silicone albeit abit questionable in places but this is nothing major and something i can rectify myself. the windows aren't fitted with trickle vents no, they have put trim around the inside which ill be taking off soon as im in the process of renovating that room.

It is a big window so i appreciate some heat loss through the glass. its 12ft long by around 5ft high I think so it is abit of a beast

Ive also noticed the openers dont close fully either. When closed i can easily slide a 50p coin down the gap between the opener and the frame however im not sure how this can be rectified as the guide for the locks are back as far as they will go

  • I'd have a check around the window as well, see if there's any obvious cold spots that you can find and that could be a sign of bad sealing
  • have a look at the espag locking mech fitted into the sash . they will normally be able to adjust on offset cams with a small 2.5 or 3mm allen key  and / or if shootbolts fitted they can also tighten up .
