Life insurance

Just done my first quote for life insurance
I hate it find it so intrusive
I was on anti depressants years and years ago for a short period of time and self harmed (just cuts on my arm nothing serious) wear hearing aids (normal hearing loss like many people wearing them)
And high blood pressure which is now under control
And I have to go to insurance broker
Apparently
I don't see the self harm/depression as relevant as it was over 10 years ago
I really thought it would be straight forward as there's nothing seriously wrong with me!

If it's not relevant, then the data should agree with that.

But it's up to the provider to assess the risk for themselves.

    It is relevant.

In insurance terms you have two things that make you higher risk.   Hypertension and Depression.   If the depression was event-driven (i.e. a cause for that resulted in short term issues) then generally, the pricing is not increased as long as it's not recent.   If no cause was identified or it has been repeated, then the pricing is usually increased.  Hypertension usually results in an increase.

Apart from that, it is straightforward although the IFA/whole of market mortgage adviser that you intend to use may want to put the case to the underwriting of various insurers before submitting the case just to get an indication of how they will treat it.

  • I think it probably was event driven but no idea if that's recorded anywhere and it wasn't asked when I did the quote

With life assurance questions, you answer what you are asked. No more, no less.  If they don't ask then you don't offer.   However, if they do ask, then you must be truthful as to the best of your knowledge.
