Appealing missed deadline with HMRC - payment on account

Hi there, appreciate your advice!

I am required to submit a self assessment to HMRC due to income from a rental property. While I know this needs to be submitted by 31 Jan, I hadn’t clocked that there was a second deadline of 30 Dec to allow me the option to pay any tax owing through my tax code. I’ve just spoken to HMRC who have explained that this deadline is non negotiable and I’m therefore required to pay all outstanding tax from 20/21 plus a forward payment on account of 50% for 21/22 tax by 31 Jan. This seems disproportionate to me and I’m wondering if there is any way to appeal or ask HMRC to change this to allow me to continue to pay out if my tax code as I’ve done the last few years? (I know that I can negotiate with HMRC in terms of the payment deadline and amounts etc so just particularly looking for advice specifically around being able to pay via the tax code)
thanks so much in advance!

In a word no, HMRC will not negotiate until you are in financial hardship.

If you fail to make payment interest and charges hit your account but you can then negiotate with them. You will continue to acrue interest until the debt is paid but the payments can be tailored to suit you.

Been there done that, many years ago and I was terrified what they would do but in the end they hepled so if you do get into trouble, please don't ignore them as that just makes it ten times worse.
