Peoples Energy Company Outstanding Bill Query

Hi

Last year I moved into a property that was supplied by Peoples Energy Company. I had already signed up to get my energy from Eon Next and there was a brief 4 week period before the switchover where I was being supplied by peoples energy company.

They wrote a letter address to the occupier stating that they would be sending a bill for the supply in this interim period, I waited and recieved no bill and then they went bust.

I firgured someone would take over this account and i would eventually hear from them, however heard nothing. Yesterday I recieved a letter addressed to the occupier from a random debt collection company called Credit Style. There was no information on this letter and no answer when calling them.

I then Googled who took over from peoples energy company and found it was Brittish Gas. Spoke to them today who advised that no account had been transferred voer to them as we had transferred to Eon prior to Peoples Energy going bust.

Im worried that I now have a debt collection agency chasing me for something I have recieved no communication from anyone about for a bill I am happy to pay if I could find out who to pay it too.

Does anyone on here have any advice on who i can contact about this as Brittish Gas can't help and Credit Style are being hard to get in touch with and i dont want to get any negative marks on my credit file i have spent years trying to repair

Thanks!

    Welcome to the forum.
What exactly does it say on the letter from Credit Style?
    • Do they say they are acting for People's Energy?
    • Do they specify the period for which they are seeking payment, and is that the period when you were a PE customer?
    • Does it include a breakdown of how much they're looking for including the applicable tariff and details of your usage?
If none of the above, what makes you think it's for you rather than one of the previous occupants?

Why do you think you have a debt collector chasing you, when the letter is not addressed to you?

What is the issue with having any debt collector being involved? This is nothing they can do without a court order that the creditor couldn't do if they were so inclined

When you moved into the property, did you contact Peoples Energy to open and account with them? If not, why not?

    Hi thanks for replying

There is basically zero information or context too it. We have tried calling but they dont answe their phones and there is no email address to contact them. We found a form on their website but not willing to give my details to them until i understand what it is they are after.

I am at work so cant remember exactly what the letter said but it mentions about living in the property for the specified period but there is not specified period.

There is no breakdown of anything or indication of what money is owed either. I literally have no idea what its about and it seems nigh on impossible to get in contact with them.

I dont know who it could be for, I only assume its the peoples energy thing as apart from my mortgage i have got my self debt free and this is the only thing it could be.

    Hi thanks for replying.

Im not sure who it is for but just want to get to the bottom of it. I had already opened the account with Eon next before I moved and I was unaware of who the current providor was but Eon said they would find out. I did recieve a letter addressed to the occupier stating that they would be sending a bill but none arrived and then they went bust so Im not sure what i can do.

The frustrating thing is I will happily pay the bill but have no idea who we can pay.

As for the debt collector being involved, its only because my partner is quite heavily pregnant so its causing her a bit of stress which i want to avoid. I personally dont know what they can do to get a court order or CCJ on me as they dont know who i am but my partner used to work for Coperative Energy in their accounts team and dealt with Credit Style so knows they are likely to be underhanded as most DCA are!
  • Hi,

I've had this exact same letter last week.

A mystery letter from Credit style with no name other than the occupier of.

It references if I was the occupier between "these dates" but there are no dates specified in the letter.

I know that before I moved into the house the previous supplier was the People's Energy who have subsequently gone bust but we Immediately switched to Octopus energy and I came to a similar conclusion as to yourself as it was the only thing I could think there'd be some kind of outstanding credit for against the address.

I checked the reference number against their website and it says there's no record of this case reference.

I'm unsure how to proceed. They have no name, they have no agreement signed by me. But don't want this to get out of hand with them being a DC. There's no amount on the letter owed.

    Happy 2022.

Hopefully both of you now know that when you move into a new property, it is important to register with the existing supplier first, and only then switch to a new supplier, you must not simply switch without doing that first.
