Income protection

Just got off the phone to an advisor who couldn't give us a quote for income protection as my other half isn't registered with a gp!

He gave us a life insurance quote based on him registering to a go  straight away as he needs to be registered for at least 2weeks.

He said he doesn't have access to the full market so does anyone here  know of a company that will insure us for income protection considering my fiancé has only just registered?

How long have they been without a doctor? Lived in the UK all their life?

Insurers dont like the unknown and an absence of information will be a significant concern

I suppose that makes sense.  Its not something I have come across before but seeing as you need to disclose the GP details and the insurer can write to the GP for information, if you don't have a GP, it introduces a level of risk that would put many off.

Normally, those that are not whole of market are more expensive than those that do.  Worth considering as this is a moneysaving site. And with income protection, it can be very important to have whole of market access as the differences in PHI policies across providers can be significant.

Not he's from hungary, been in UK for 10years. Hasn't seen a gp once. We keep meaning to register him but just never felt the need to as he's hasn't yet needed to go, which I suppose is good thing!

Most insurers require you to have been registered with a UK GP for at least the last 2-years for you to be able to obtain income protection cover.  AIG don't, however, if there are any medical disclosures which would trigger the requirement for a GP report then your partner would come unstuck and they'd not be able to offer cover.  That said, I'm presuming they must have been ft and well for the last 10-years if they've not even needed to register with a GP.

One potential issue, AIG aren't particularly well priced for a lot of occupations when looking at income protection.  In fact, I'd go as far as suggest they are at the most expensive end of the market in a lot of cases and there's a good number of manual based occupations that they won't even provide income protection for.

Personally, if your partner can get income protection via AIG then he could BUT I'd suggest he'd be as well registering with a GP asap and once he's been registered for 2-years he could look at alternative providers, of which there are likely to be numerous more cost-effective solutions, even when he is 2-years older.
