Travel to Australia

I'm hoping to travel to Australia in March to visit my daughter in Canberra for 5 weeks.  I know the Covid rules were changed on November 1st to allow parents to visit there children but logging on to the Australian Government Home Affairs website has confused me completely. Can anyone who has completed the process tell me in simple terms what I'm supposed to do.
Many thanks, John (a simpleton)

  • If your daughter is aa adult permanent resident of Australia, you will need to have your relationship with your adult Australian child confirmed by submitting a travel exemption request.

You must submit your request through the Travel Exemption Portal. Select the category ‘I am an immediate family member’ and then ‘parent of adult Australian citizen or permanent resident’.

You will need to provide evidence of:

    • your adult child’s Australian citizenship or permanent residency; and
    • your parental relationship to the Australian citizen or permanent resident.
More details of the Examples of evidence that you can provide’ are here : https://covid19.homeaffairs.gov.au/immediate-family-australian-citizens-or-permanent-residents-or-new-zealand-citizens-usually-resident-australi:smile:

The earliest you can apply for exemption is not more than two months, before your planned travel.
  • Thanks onashoestring.  Yes I have got that far but when I click on ADD and fill in that form it asks for my Australian visa status , if I give the answer none which seems appropriate it does not let me proceed without changing to  another selection if I put "Not Required" it says I'm and Australian or NZ citizen which of course I'm not. If I cliik on Visa Holder or Visa Applied it insists on reference number of visa which I haven't got.  Then I'm stuck.

    At the above link:

If you don’t have a visa

You cannot come to Australia until you have a visa. More information about getting a visa to Australia can be found at Explore visa options.

  • Thanks eskbanker,   So I have to apply for a visa first before applying for the travel exemption,  I assume I don't apply for the free eVisitor sub-class 651 as I did  pre-covid but apply for the Visitor visa (subclass 600) Tourist Stream costing 145AUD,  do you think that's correct?

Sorry, no idea!  It's not an area I'm familiar with, so happy to point out the above quoted comment about needing a visa but as to which of the 37 different types available is best suited to your requirements, that's some way beyond my knowledge and you need someone who understands this in much more detail than I do....

You can still apply for the Free e-Visitor visa if you are staying less than 3 months. Processing times are quick too.

  • thanks onashoestring.  When I start to fill the e-visitor form it says "If you are an immediate family member of either an Australian citizen or permanent resident you may apply for a Visitor visa (subclass 600)"

Hi @ausanglier - I'm looking to apply for the same at the moment. Did you proced in this order:
    1) Visa - Did you apply for the 600 or 65`1?
    2) Travel exemption
    3) Book flight

and then just before departure, the ATD and COVID tests?

    Thanks

I believe they are opening the border to tourists from 21 February?
  • Hi Tafelmoneysaver, Yes I did proceed in that order and got the 600 Visa, Maybe you can now use the eVisa which is free and don't now have to apply for the  travel exemption if going after 21st Feb. It seems you still need the covid test within 3 days for PCR or within1 day for RAT maybe that will change before I go and the ATD at least three days before departure.
